It is curious that he is careful to give his wife one-third of everything, but says nothing about the other two-thirds. The following details are believed to be true but should not be totally relied upon: The testator is thought to have married three times: to Elizabeth X, with son William (1677 qv); to Joane WHEELER; and to Alyce HIGHORNE who survived him.

... I Richard Coopper of Chadlington ... husbandman, weak in body ... My body is to be buried in the churchyard of Chadlington. I give the church of Chadlington 12d. I give the poor of Chadlington 12d. I give my man Samuel Watts one pied heifer and five good sheep. I give my wife Allice Coopper my house etc at Chipping Norton for life. After her death I give it to my son William Coopper and his heirs forever. I give my son William's two children two sheep between them. I give Richard Tarlisse one sheep. I give Susanna Tarlisse one sheep. I give my daughter Allice Platt and her child one sheep. My debts being first paid, I give my wife one third of all that is due to me, that is the house, my goods about the house and backside, my corn growing in the field and in the barn or backside, and my cattle. I give my grandchild Richard Coopper my biggest brass pot. I appoint my sons William Cooper and Robert Cooper Executors. I give my godchildren George Haughten and Richard Shury one lamb each. In the Name of God Amen I Richard Coopper of Chadlington in the County of Oxford husbandman weake in Body but of perfect Remembrance God be thanked for it doe make this my last Will and Testament in manner and forme following First I bequeath my Soule into the Hands of Almightie God hoping by the merits and Intercession of my Lord and Saviour to be restored to a joyfull Resurrection In the second place my Body to be buried in the Churchyeard of Chadlington And for my worldly Goods wherewith God hath blessed mee I dispose of in maner and forme following Inprimis I give to the Church of Chadlington twelve pence Item I give to the poore of Chadlington twelve pence Item I give to my Man Samuell Watts one pide heifer and five good sheepe Item I give to my Wife Allice Coopper my house with the Appurtenances thereunto at Chipping Norton during her naturall life and after her naturall life is ended I give the said house in Chipping Norton to my Sonn William Cooper and his heirs forever Item I give unto my Sonn William Coopers two Children two sheepe betweene them Item I give to Richard Tarlisse one sheepe Item I give to Susanna Tarlisse one sheepe Item I give to my Daughter Allice Platt and her Child one sheepe Item I give to my wife Allice Cooper one third part of all my Goods about the house and Backside Item I give unto my said Wife one third part of all my Corne either growing in the Field or at home in the Barne or in the Backside Item I give unto my wife Allice Cooper one third part of the House and a third part of the Cattle to my said Wife namelie my Wife is to have one third part of all that is due unto mee my Debts being paied first Item I give to my Grandchild Richard Coopper my biggest Brasse pott Item I appoint and constitute to be the sole Executors of this my last Will and Testament my Sonn William Cooper and my Sonne Robert Cooper Witnesse my hand and Seale this third day of August in the the yeare of our lord God One thousand six hundred fiftie and two / Richard Cooper his marke / In the p[re]sents of Thomas Lord Jun. Andrewe Adamse. / And likewise my Godchild George Haughten one Lambe is given him and my Godchild Richard Shury I give one Lambe. / This Will was proved at Westminster the eighteenth day of May in the year of our Lord 1653 before the Judges for probate of Wills and granting Administratons according to an Act of Parlyament entituled an Act for probate of Wills and granting Administrations by the Oathes of William Cooper and Robert Cooper the Sonnes and Executors named in the said Will to whome the Administraton was remitted of all and singular the Goods Chattles and Debts of the said deceased they being first sworne by Com'ission truly to administer [..]. /
