Transcriber's and Editor's Notes
Not technically an Oxon will, but he leaves property in Burford.
He seems to use "nephew" and "cousin" interchangeably, and it is probable that (for instance) the two Thomas FOWLEs are the same man.
Some of it is very hard to decipher. Unusually (and interestingly), he gives the full Sunday titles of "King" Philip and Queen Mary.
Even if deciphered, some of the ancient legalese is too difficult for this transcriber, and anyone who needs to know exactly what it was all about is invited to inspect either the transcript or (preferably) the original.

  • I give my nephew Richard Okehold my Manor of Donnington (GLS) etc and all my messuages, cottages, lands, tenements, meadows, leasows, rents, Rent___s and ____, courts, fines, heriots and all my other hereditaments etc in Donnington,Slaughter and Oddington, to him and the lawful heirs of his body.
    In default of such issue, to my own right heirs forever, to be held of the chief lords of the fee thereof .....
    In order that Richard Okeholde and his heirs may enjoy the Manor and other premises, all my heirs, that is John Osbaston, son and heir of my sister Joane, Thomas Fowle, son and heir of my sister Elinor, and Henry Okeholde, son and heir of my sister Jane, and their heirs, and also my said sisters, shall [renounce any claim to the property, as drawn up by Richard's attorney, at Richard's expense]
  • Re the residue of my lands, tenements etc: if my cousins and heirs, sisters and their heirs do as I ask above, then William Badger, gent, and Richard Caricke, my feoffees by force of a deed of feoffment dated 23rd Jun [1557] and their heirs shall hold that residue to the use of my cousins John Osbaston, Thomas Fowle and Henry Okold and their heirs as follows:
    If any of them refuses [to renounce], he and his heirs [shall have no part] of my lands etc, and his share goes to the others.
    If they all refuse, all the residue of my lands etc goes to Richard Okold and his heirs forever.
    On those conditions:
    • I give my cousin John Osbaston all my messuages, cottages, lands, tenements etc in OXF Burford and Fifield, WOR Daylesford? and GLS Stowe Saint Edward, to him and his heirs forever.
    • I give my cousin Henry Okehold all my messuages, lands and tenements etc in GLS Clapton? Bourton on the Water and Westcote, to him and his heirs forever.
  • I give Fernando Osbaston £20.
  • I give my sister Johanne Osbaston 40s.
  • I give my sister Jane Maylett 40s, and to all her natural daughters 40s apiece.
  • To my cousin Elianor Rogers 20s, and to all her children 6s 8d apiece.

  • I give the said William Badger Sr my gold signet.
  • I give the said Richard Caricke my bay gelding.

  • My other legacies will appear in a schedule annexed.
  • If any question, doubt, ambiguity or variance arises between any parties concerning either my lands or my goods, it shall be resolved by my trusty friends John Sutton, clerk, William Badger, gent, and Richard Carick, whom I make overseers, and I give each of them for his labour £3 plus their expenses.
  • The residue of my goods and chattels I give to my cousin Richard Okehold whom I make executor.

  • I give the parish church of Doddington 20s, and to its bells and rood light 6s 8d.
  • My wife is to give £20 to the poor on the day of my burial. If it is not all given in that day, she is to bestow the rest afterwards at the discretion of Sir William Edling, vicar of Doddington, William Arrice? William Clements and Humfrey Rolles?
  • I give John Rogers 20s.
  • To Alice Dyntie? 6s 8d.
  • I give Alexander Barnes £10 and to his wife 40s.
  • I give my wife Florence Hale all my leases, goods and cattals in the parish of Doddington, to hold without any interference from my executors or anyone else.
  • I give her £100 in ready money which she already has in her custody.
  • I give her an annuity of £10 for life from my Manor and lands etc, as follows:
    • Out of my Manor of Donnington £6.
    • Out of my lands etc in Stowe Saint Edward 13s 4d.
    • Out of my lands etc in Bourton on the Water 13s 4d.
